Is This Normal?
The chaos that is the KerbersArchive for TV
Get these songs out of my head!
Ben and I attended the Normal Community High School Musical, “School House Rock Live!” for the third time tonight. Yes, you read that correctly…the third time. He absolutely loved the show each time we went, and when he literally begged me to go again tonight, I couldn’t say no. It is a cute show, and the nostalgia of the songs gave me a good feeling. But there is a serious problem: I can NOT get the songs out of my head! I’ve been going from song to song daily since we went the first time last Friday. Today it was “A Noun is a Person, Place or Thing” that I could not stop singing to myself. Tonight it is “Mr. Morton”.
I get that it was kind of the point of the original cartoons to get stuck in your head so you’d be learning without even knowing it. I mean, let’s face it, I did sing “The Preamble” song in my head so I could write it out to pass my constitution test in eighth grade. But now I know my parts of speech pretty well, and if I don’t stop thinking about these songs, it just may make me crazy!
I heart lazy Sundays
Today was one of those days that you don’t want to end. We had friends over last night, so the kids got to bed pretty late, which meant that we all slept in this morning. I hate to admit it, but we never even gave a thought to getting up for Sunday School and church. We simply enjoyed the sleep and then layed around in bed for a while before we finally decided to get up. After a late breakfast, we all just kind of did our own thing. The kids were playing together so well, they didn’t even mind that the TV wasn’t on a “kid channel” like usual. That is something!
They were playing, they did some stickers, Dave and Ben played some Mario Kart, and we just generally enjoyed hanging out together. After lunch, we all headed to Menard’s to pick up some things to work on our shower door. A piece on the bottom was loose, and the rubber stripping and caulk was pretty gross, so it was time to change it. I guess there comes a point when no amount of scrubbing can get some things clean. The kids are generally pretty happy to go to Menard’s because they have a bunch of swingsets and playhouses put together in a play area in their garden center. It was a bit chilly, but the kids were excited to run around and shovel wood chips.
After we got home, we did put on a movie for the kids, but they continued to play together so well. With all the bickering we’ve heard lately, I was really thrilled to see them getting along so well. Dave and I each worked on our part of the shower door task, and before long it was bath time. They played in the bath and got ready for bed without any resistance, which was nice, too.
After the kids were tucked in and lights were out, the nice day turned into an icky Sunday night as usual. I always hate the “Sunday Night Feeling”…when you know you have to go back to work in the morning. But I won’t focus on that right now…I’m just going to enjoy the memory of a really great day with my family.
Snowtorious B.I.G.
Well, it happened. The storm came just like everyone said it would. Snowtorious B.I.G. is here!!
We found out about 8:30 last night that school would be closed today…all in anticipation of the big weather event that would supposedly happen. My class and Emma’s choir had both already been cancelled, and those were on Wednesday night! Everyone was really preparing for a giant storm. So when I got up this morning and it was doing nothing outside I thought maybe our school officials (and everyone else who was whipped into a near frenzy) were crazy. But about 10:45 this morning it started snowing, and it was immediately snowing hard. By noon it was blowing and was near white-out conditions. Everything was shutting down early and even State Farm closed at 12:30. It didn’t really seem like much was accumulating, because the wind was blowing so hard, but of course it was all landing and drifting somewhere.
We enjoyed our snow day watching TV and movies, playing games, and generally being lazy around the house. The kids are already starting to understand how special a snow day really is. I know all my teacher friends were loving opportunity to go to bed last night without setting the alarm! Meanwhile, the storm got worse into the evening and right now the wind is howling outside so much that it’s actually noisy in here! If it keeps up this badly all night, we’re liable to have over a foot of snow and some seriously plugged up roads. School was cancelled again for tomorrow by 5:00pm tonight. I don’t think anyone would have thought that we’d be able to go tomorrow…it’s going to take some time to get us all out of this!!
Stay warm and safe, everyone, and enjoy your time home together!
Dang it!
The silly old Bears did it to me again. Just when we had a chance to get to the Super Bowl, they go and choke. And this time it’s exponentially worse, because they choked while facing their biggest rivals of all time, the stupid Packers.
Thankfully, we were over at the Inces’ house for the game. There were four families there, and it was really great for all of us to have the moral support of other fans. We suffered together. Plus the kids were so entertained playing with all their friends that us grownups got to really watch the game with very little interruption. Win/win.
The only saving grace is that the Steelers won the AFC Championship game, so they will be playing, and hopefully destroying the Packers in the Super Bowl. Let’s hope so, anyway.
I will always love you Bears, even though you continue to break my heart.
Ready for Santa
The excitement in the house is almost palpable. It’s Christmas Eve and Santa will be here in no time. We had a great day and evening together as a family and I think everyone is eagerly anticipating the next couple of days. But tonight before the kids headed to bed, there were things that needed to get done.
First, we wrote a note so Santa would know that the things on the coffee
table were for him. Then we got the special cookies we had decorated and selected for him and put them on our special Santa plate. We also got a couple of carrots to leave for him to take up to the reindeer. Finally, we poured a glass of milk and our setting was complete.
We can’t wait to see what Santa brings us. Thankfully the kids were so exhausted from playing outside for two hours this afternoon that neither one of them complained too much when we headed up to bed. I’m sure they were asleep in no time, and I’m just hoping that they sleep until at least daybreak before bounding into our room to get us up to see what is waiting for tomorrow morning.
My little chicken
This afternoon was rainy and lazy, which would have been the perfect time for us to go see Toy Story 3 in the theaters. It was just released last week, and everyone is all abuzz about it. We all love the first movie, and Buzz and Woody are continuously favorite playthings around the house. But poor Ben is just too scared to see the movie. He wants to, I can tell he does, but he knows that there’s a part in the trash compactor, and that’s just too much for him. You see, it’s nearly impossible to find a movie that doesn’t have a “scary part” in it. Sometimes he can get through it by running behind the couch and barely peeking over the top of it. But he knows that in the theater there would be nowhere for him to hide. He’s just too chicken to go.
I know he’d love the movie, and I kept talking about it most of the day until finally he just looked at me with an exasperated expression and said, “Mommy, I just want you to stop talking about it!” The poor kid wants to be brave…he just can’t.
No longer LOST
Right now, as I type, the series finale of LOST is starting. We’re not watching it yet, because I can’t stand to watch the show live anymore. The anticipation of tonight’s show has been building all season, but over the weekend it pretty much turned into a media frenzy. I have to admit that I’m right there with everyone else who has followed this show since the beginning…I absolutely can’t wait to see where it takes us tonight.
I’m sure that at the end of the finale no one will have all of their questions answered, but I hope I at least feel satisfied with the conclusion. I do think this is a monumental event, because like it or not, LOST changed the face of television over the last six years. Sure, I’ve always loved talking about TV with friends and colleagues, but it’s never been like this before. This show has made us viewers happy, made us angry, made us confused, and most of all made us all theorize and question everything about it. What a fun ride it’s been, and although I’m sad to see it go, I’m also a bit relieved. Watching LOST is exhausting…I don’t think I’ve ever thought or talked about a TV show more in my life. Thanks for the ride, LOST!!
Getting LOST
Tonight is the premiere of the final season of LOST. I know that it’s only a TV show, but seriously…this has got me so excited ! There is a big group of teachers at school who watch the show, and each week we have a blast discussing the episode; trying to answer the hundreds of questions the writers have left us with and to decipher all of the clues they give us throughout each episode.
I know that the phenomenon of LOST has kind of diminished throughout the years, but I am just as into it as I have ever been. I feel badly for anyone who did not watch from the beginning, though, because essentially this is an impossible series to pick up halfway through. I just can’t wait for this season to get going, because the creators have been very clear in saying that questions will be answered and by the end all of us faithful viewers will know what’s actually going on.
They had better be telling the truth, because if not, things could get ugly!
Splurgin’
Dave and I got another new TV yesterday. I say another new one because we got a new TV last spring when we finished the basement. Buying that one was really was the whole beginning of the end for our old TV. Once we had the nice, new high definition TV, we of course had to get high definition Dish service. Once we got that service this summer, all we could think about was a new HD TV for our family room. It really is soooo much better watching TV in high definition. I mean, really, have you seen it? It’s so freakin’ clear! And, as an extra added bonus, the new TV is larger in “official size” than the old one, but it’s actually much smaller in stature. Dave got the old TV about 12 years ago (he thinks) and he and his brother Steve could barely carry it out to the truck. The new one? I think Dave could carry it all by himself. I just love how technology keeps improving!
Now I know you frugal people are thinking we’re crazy, but hey…what are tax refunds for, anyway, right?? We don’t splurge on ourselves very often, but it sure feels good when we do!
Get Lost
It’s finally here…the premier of Lost tonight at 8:00!! Anyone who knows me well already knows about my addiction to this show. With no disrespect meant to The Brady Bunch, which will always be my all-time favorite show, Lost is truly one of the best shows ever. I love a story that is unpredictable, often shocking, and truly makes you long for the next episode to begin as soon as the current one ends. Lost does all of these. Unfortunately, if you haven’t watched it before, or if you haven’t kept up with it from the beginning, you probably won’t be able to start now. There are so many twists, turns, and layers to this story that I think it would be impossible to catch up without some serious TV watching dedication. But if you have the chance, I highly recommend renting the old seasons and catching up to where we pick up tonight. I know Dave and my butts will be parked on the couch at 8:20 or so (so we can fast forward through the commercials) glued to the set. Now if only we got the local channels in HD…
But I digress. It may be sad and pathetic to be this excited about a TV show, but I am…and I’m proud to be a freakishly obsessed Lostie!!!
