Sycamore or bust

So we’re back home from an overnight stay in Sycamore.  We went up yesterday morning and got there just in time to go to Brett’s basketball game.  It was very fun for both of the kids.  What more could you want than a giant fieldhouse with all kinds of room to run around in and bleachers on which to climb?

Brett had a great game, and his team was victorious.  After a good nap, Rod, Nance, Curtis & Brett all came to Grandma & Grandpa’s house for dinner.  It was a very fun night of eating, drinking, and lots of playing.  The Swartzie boys are always so great with our kids.  Unfortunately, Ryan’s girlfriend and Valentine’s Day trumped our visit, as to be expected.  They were spending the evening together, so he didn’t get to join us.

Then came the overnight.  Please understand that my kids are world class sleepers.  They both go to bed really easily, and they both need their sleep.  Sadly, though, Ben got a fever last night, and this resulted in both of us getting very little of the precious commodity.  He was literally up crying almost every half hour or so.  He would wake up crying and say something like, “I’m too sick to sleep!” or something bizarre like, ”I don’t want to go into that room to play with them” or he’d just cry and say he didn’t know why he was crying.  The poor little guy.  A couple of times he wanted to sit with me in the rocker.  We’d rock for ten minutes or so, and then he’d say, “Ok, I’m ready now.”  We’d get back in bed (I was sleeping with him on the sofa bed by this time) and just as I’d be falling asleep, he’d be crying again.  This lasted most of the night.  In the morning, Grandpa saved the day by running out to get some medicine.  As soon as it kicked in, he was much perkier and the day was better, but as soon as it started to wear off, it would be very obvious.

Today Swartzies came down again, and we watched the Illini beat Indiana while we were waiting for Curtis’s basketball game.  It was canceled, though, so we didn’t get to watch him.  I was disappointed…I rarely get to go to their games anymore.  Maybe next time.

Overall, it was a very nice weekend.  I’m just hoping that poor Ben (and I) get more sleep than we did last night.  Right now, though, I’m hearing him cough a lot in the monitor, so the outlook isn’t so great.  Wish me some sweet dreams!!

The Illini game

Thursday afternoon one of my assistant principals came into my office and asked me if I’d be interested in two tickets to the Illini vs. Wisconsin basketball game on Saturday.  His parents have season tickets, and apparently no one in his family could go to the game.  I called Dave, and we decided to go.  Dave had never been to a game at the Assembly Hall, so I was really excited to experience it though his eyes.

I was shocked, though, that he wasn’t very excited about going.  I couldn’t believe it!  I definitely had the impression that he just agreed to go because he could tell that I wanted to.  But…we went.  And of course, within five minutes of being in the Hall, Dave turned to me and said, “I’m so glad that we came, Honey.  I really wasn’t sure that I wanted to, but I knew you did, and now I’m so glad we did.”  Shew!  That’s so like Dave…hesitant to go do something, but in almost every case, he’s very happy that he did it.

It was a good game…not great, but it was a victory, which is the most important thing.  The Jesse White tumblers performed at half time, which is always a great show.  And, we had Papa Del’s pizza before the game, which is always a good thing.  But most of all, it was a really nice day spent with my husband.  We don’t get enough time alone together these days, so we both really enjoyed each other’s company.

As for the Illini…they’re in sole posession of 2nd place in the Big Ten right now, which is awesome!  We have a big game coming up vs. Minnesota on Thursday, so Go Illini!!!

Braggin’ rights

Tonight is the annual Busch Braggin’ Rights game between Illinois and Mizzou.  It’s one of the first big hurdles for the Illini to get over before the start of the Big Ten season.  In honor of the big game, both kids were decked out in their orange and blue.

Go Illini!

Since Clarice the reindeer was blocking Emma’s outfit, I decided to get another shot of her.  Our little cheerleaderThat was not easy!  That little girl is on the go all the time, and when she doesn’t want to do something, good luck in talking her into it!!  This was my best effort in showing her cheerleader’s uniform:

Let’s hope the Illini can pull out a big victory as an early Christmas present to all of us alum!

I-L-L…

O Christmas tree, part 2

This year I finally did it…we actually have an Illini Christmas tree!  We got a little 4½’ artificial tree a couple of years ago with the good intention of decorating it with all of our Illini themed ornaments.  Since Dave and I are both loyal alums (some would say fanatical) we’d collected quite a few different ones over the years.  The first year I took it out of the box and put it together, but I never got a single decoration onto it.  Last year was just a whirlwind and it never even came up from storage.  Well, last night I finally got the job done.  The Illini tree is put together, decorated and displayed proudly in our front room window.  It really looks great…if I do say so myself!

We're loyal to you, Illinois

We're loyal to you, Illinois

Let’s hope our little tree will help the Illini get some victories as they head into the Big Ten season on December 30th.
