Happy Halloween
What a beautiful night! The weather could not have cooperated with us any more than a clear night with temperatures in the upper 60s. We had a lot of fun trick-or-treating.
Emma was just so happy to be out walking around. She didn’t even really go up to doors much, which was fine with us since we’d already gotten plenty of candy. I think Ben may have had more fun passing out candy when we got home. He would say, “Hi, guys” to all the kids at the door, and sometimes he’d ask, “what are you?” It was great. Now we get to sort candy, decide what to freeze, and figure out which things will disappear from his pumpkin. Sometimes it’s great to be the grownup!
Hope you all had a happy, safe Halloween!
Our little tomboy
The dichotomy that is Emma. She always wants to have her “pretties” on and carry her purse around, yet wants everything that her brother has, loves, and plays with. These were taken while Ben was spending some time on the couch finding his happy face, so she got free time with his toys. What did she go for? Mac the semi and his racecars. It was pure happiness for our sweet little tomboy.
Carving out some fun
Tonight we carved the first Kerber Jack-o’-lantern ever. It was so fun. Ben didn’t want to touch any of the “limey tuff” (slimey stuff) inside the pumpkin, but Emma was all for it. Of course, she wanted to eat the guts, too. We had a hard time deciding what kind of face to make, but finally Ben decided he should be mad, so that’s what we went for. I think it was quite successful.
I DO make a difference
Watch this amazing 10 year old boy from Dallas. If you’re not moved, you may not be alive. Then again, maybe I loved it so much because he’s speaking to a bunch of teachers, but still…this kid is something else.
I think we sometimes need a kick in the pants to remember how much our job matters in the grand scheme of things. So to all of you teachers reading this (and of course by teachers I mean anyone who works in a school) thanks for everything you do for kids!
Happy birthday Uncle Steve & Jamie!
Wow, a Kerber and an Atherton birthday today. Although one of you is just starting her high school years and the other is WELL beyond that, hope you both have a great birthday. Here’s to many more!
Fun in the dark
Hey, get your mind out of the gutter…this probably isn’t going to be about what you think it is!
Last night, our power went out about 7:45 p.m. Conveniently, it was pouring outside, and had been most of the afternoon and evening. Dave nervously went to check the sump pump, and sure enough, water was trickling in and the tank was filling up. So he raced out to the farm to get the generator, and I started bailing out the water. On my hands & knees. In the dark. Trying to hold a flashlight and carry bucketful after bucketful over to the drain. It was very fun. I kept up with it just fine for about 45 minutes until he got back. After having the generator on for only a few minutes, the power came back on. I think that both of us had frightening visions of water pouring into our basement again after getting the carpet replaced from last time just 10 days ago!
Thank goodness that didn’t happen.
Happy anniversary, Grandma Judy & Grandpa Scott!
October 22, 1960…the day of my parents’ wedding. Mom says it was a warm, perfect fall day. Since then, they’ve been a great example for all us, and I think I can honestly say that they’re having as much fun or more now than they’ve ever had. Happy 48th anniversary, Mom & Dad…and here’s to many more years together!
Happy birthday, Aunt Nanny!
Hope you have a great day! My goal is to find a picture of you celebrating a birthday past, but so far I’ve had no luck. I’m so going to keep trying, though…
Back home where they belong
Ben and Emma had a fun-filled weekend in Sycamore with Grandma Judy and Grandpa Scott. We met on Friday night to drop them off, and then again tonight to pick them up. They absolutely love going up there and have so much fun playing with their cousins and G & G. And as much as we looked forward to the time here by ourselves, it was really great to get the kids back home tonight. Sure, we slept in on Saturday and Sunday mornings (even I didn’t get up until almost 8:00!), we got a bunch of little jobs done around the house, and we went out to dinner twice in the same weekend, but it just didn’t seem the same without them here. I guess that goes to show us that we truly are parents before anything else…just having them upstairs asleep right now gives me comfort. I can honestly say that I had no idea I would ever feel like this about my kids before I was a parent.
I L L-I N I
Last night Dave and I had the pleasure of attending the Illinois vs. Indiana game in Champaign. Thanks to Theresa’s generous birthday present, we had tickets that were very close to our old season ticket seats, so it was especially fun and nostalgic to go to the game. As we walked around Campustown earlier in the day, we marveled at how much the campus has changed. There’s even a giant high rise apartment complex being built on Green St. where Burger King was! Thankfully they didn’t tear down the old O’Malley’s building next door, though. That would have really been a blow. But as much as some things change, there are so many things that just stay the same…the Alma Mater is still welcoming everyone to the quad, the line to get into Kam’s was still almost to the C.O.’s doorway, and Pop’s pizza is still the best you can find anywhere!
It was a great day for us and was topped off with a 55-13 pounding of the Hoosiers. The only thing that could have made the day or night better was if the Chief came running out of the band while it was playing the Three-in-one. *sigh*
